Who Should Come?

The ACM SIGMETRICS/Performance 2006 conference presents state-of-the-art results on the development and application of analytic, simulation, and experimental techniques for the measurement, modeling, and performance evaluation of computer systems. All graduate students with an interest in performance evaluation, whether they are paper authors or not, are encouraged to attend the conference. SIGMETRICS encourages participation of women and under-represented minority groups.

The student registration fee for the conference is approximately half the regular rate for ACM members. Nonetheless, student registration provides full participation in all conference activities (i.e., technical sessions, copy of proceedings, breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks, reception, and banquet).

Special Event

In addition to the regular conference activities, the following events may be of particular interest to graduate students:

  • PhD Student Dinner (evening of Wednesday, June 28). This dinner outing is sponsored by IBM. There is room for about 20 students. You can sign up in person at the conference on Monday.

Travel Support for Students

The goal of the travel grant program is to encourage participation in the SIGMETRICS/Performance 2006 conference by students that would normally find it difficult to attend. Applications are accepted from students at degree granting institutions throughout the world.

The committee thanks France Telecom, HP Labs, IBM Research, Intel, Microsoft Research, and VMware for funding this program for all students.

Who Should Apply?

All Ph.D. students are encouraged to apply. Selection criteria will include evidence of a serious interest in measurement and modeling of computer systems, as demonstrated by publications, coursework, and project experience. SIGMETRICS/Performance 2006 encourages participation of women and under-represented minorities.

What is Covered?

The amount of support provided to each student is intended to cover in whole or in part the student's conference and workshops/tutorials registration fees (early registration only), travel (economy airfare, public transportation such as bus only), and lodging for 3 nights (if the student does not register for the workshops/tutorials program) or 5 nights (if the student registers for workshops and tutorials). The breakdown of cost will differ based on the student's location.

The amount awarded to students will depend on the total funds available and the number of successful applications received. The maximum grant amount is approximately 700 € ($850 USD).

How to Apply

An application for a travel grant will consist of:

  • a letter from the student,
  • the student's curriculum vitae, and
  • a recommendation letter from the student's advisor.

The letter from the student should:

  • indicate why the student believes he or she would benefit from attending the SIGMETRICS/Performance 2006 conference,
  • briefly summarize research interests and accomplishments to date, and
  • describe areas reflected in the SIGMETRICS/Performance 2006 program that would impact the student's research.

The letter from the student's advisor should:

  • confirm that the student is a Ph.D. candidate in good standing,
  • indicate why the advisor believes the student would benefit from attending the conference, and
  • give the advisor's opinion about the strengths and potential research contributions of the student.

Please send application and recommendation letters in ASCII, PostScript, or PDF format (only) by e-mail to:

Cathy Xia, (cathyx@us.ibm.com) for North American institutions, or to

Louis-Marie Le Ny, (louis-marie.leny@irisa.fr) for all others.

Please use these same e-mail addresses also for questions regarding the student travel grant program.
