What is the name of our mail server?

On Department machines, use mail.cs.wm.edu. This alias will work for secure POP, secure IMAP, and smtp services within the department. Note that insecure protocols are no longer supported. For your laptop or home machine, you can still use this address to retrieve email, but should use your home ISP's smtp server for sending mail. You can set the return address to anything you like, overriding the "cox.net" (or whatever the ISP address is) default.

How do I get additional printing quota?

A faculty member must send a request to the techies on your behalf.

Can I get additional disk quota?

Home directory quota cannot be increased due to backup media constraints. Quota-free storage is available at /home/scratch, and faculty sponsored storage can be requested at /home/snap1, but neither of those locations is backed up.

How do I publish my web page?

Create a directory called public_html in your home directory. Anything under this will be reachable through our webserver. If you want to use cgi scripts, create an additional directory called cgi-bin under your public_html directory. Note that these scripts will be executed by the webserver with your permissions, as though you were executing them yourself. Caution is warranted when writing these scripts. Note that we do not allow symbolically linked scripts.

When will my machine be replaced?

Desktop machines follow a three-year replacement schedule.
