CSci 780: Homework 2

Proposal

Due Thursday, September 20th by 3:30pm

Setup

Following the link on the class homepage, download the paper template and supporting files. Install the supporting files in the share/texmf subdirectory of your home directory, or point your environment variables to use mine. Unpack the paper template and run "make" to make sure that it works. In the source directory, delete the dissertation and papers subdirectories.

You will edit the files in the proposal subdirectory. Delete the facilities, budget, and biography sections. In the description, you can delete the prior results section unless you did some preliminary work before writing the proposal. You can delete the impact, educational and diversity aspects, and previous NSF funding sections.

Proposal

Following the basic structure outlined in the proposal template, write up your proposal ideas. You should look into related work in order to better place your proposed work in the context of other work. (Google scholar and the library's INSPEC can help with this.)

The purposes of this proposal are to convince the reader that (1) you have a relevant problem, (2) what you're doing is interesting, (3) it hasn't already been done, (4) you have a neat idea on how to solve the problem, and (5) you can feasibly do it. The answer to the question, "How long should it be?" is "Long enough to say what you need to say".

Grading

100 points total. Email your writeup to David Coppit (coppit@cs.wm.edu)
