It is expected that your class project is about half completed. Prepare a writeup that describes the work that you have performed so far. It should be at least two pages in length. Describe the work in some detail. This will not be wasted work, since you can use this in your final paper.
Convince me that you haven't been procrastinating by showing or describing tangible results from your work so far. Also describe what remains to be done. If you are concerned about completing your project, propose a "course alteration" to get back on track.
