- Evaluation of the objective depends on the output of complicated
computer simulations involving large numbers of state or system
variables; it is not a simple algebraic expression exclusively
in terms of the design variables x.
- The objective is expensive to compute because the simulations
upon which its value is based are expensive to compute. (Though the
strategy we outline is amenable to other settings where the evaluation
of the objective may be expensive for other reasons.)
