Call for Doctoral Symposium

WCRE 2011 will include a Doctoral Symposium, for students who are currently working on their PhD thesis, to present their work. Students at all stages of their doctoral degree are invited to participate. The track offers an opportunity to present proposed research directions, results obtained thus far, and plans towards the completion of the PhD studies. Participants will be able to discuss their PhD plans with fellow PhD students, as well as with participants of the WCRE conference who are active and established researchers in related areas.

The Doctoral Symposium aims to provide PhD students help and advice on conducting their PhD research and practical aspects of being a researcher over their entire degree and beyond. The goal of the forum is to provide an opportunity for researchers at the start of their careers to meet and start building a network of colleagues from all over the world, which will become the research community in the years to come.

Participants will have the opportunity to liaise with and receive advice from expert advisors in the field who have had rich experience in supervising and examining PhD students. Accepted papers will be presented at the track, in front of expert panel members and other Doctoral Symposium participants. Each presentation will be followed by questions from the audience and comments/feedbacks from the panel members. In addition, there will be general discussion addressing various issues on PhD work and research experience in general. The Doctoral Symposium participates are invited to submit questions and issues they would like to have discussed as part of the panel session before the PhD Forum.

The papers should be a 4-page summary of your PhD project or dissertation and include

  1. a statement of the technical problem addressed and its importance;
  2. the specific research hypothesis or questions;
  3. a sketch of the research methodology and proposed solution;
  4. a description of the adopted evaluation method and the result obtained so far; and
  5. the expected contributions of your PhD research.

A condensed version of a research proposal would be an appropriate submission, although more preliminary papers are welcome as well. The accepted papers will appear in the WCRE proceedings.
